Where to Place Smoke Detectors & CO Alarms

Smoke Detectors

  • Bedrooms

Put alarms inside every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every floor.

  • Kitchens

Keep kitchen-related nuisance alarms down: place smoke alarms at least 10 ft (3 m) from cooking appliances.

  • Mount high (smoke rises)

Ceiling mount: keep the edge ≥4 in away from the nearest wall. Wall mount: place the top of the alarm 4–12 in below the ceiling.

  • Avoid drafty or steamy spots

Not near windows/doors/vents and not in bathrooms; keep clear of ceiling-fan blades by a few feet.

Carbon monoxide (CO) Alarms

  • Bedrooms

Place CO alarms on every level and in a central location outside each sleeping area (near bedrooms).

  • Height

Wall or ceiling mounting is acceptable, and performance is not generally dependent on height because CO mixes with room air.

  • Keep Carbon Monoxide alarms away

From direct sources and moisture: not right next to or over fireplaces or flame-producing appliances; avoid very humid areas like bathrooms.

  • One CO Alarm

If you only have one alarm, prioritize near sleeping areas (so it can wake occupants).

Pricing & Scheduling

We provide transparent, upfront pricing before any work begins. Final cost depends on your home and the scope of the job.

What affects price

  • Power source: hardwired with backup battery vs sealed battery units
  • Interconnection: tying alarms together for whole-home notification (new cable runs vs reusing existing)
  • Attic access: distance between locations, insulation depth, and tight or low-clearance spaces
  • Number of units: bedrooms, hallways, each level, and combo smoke plus CO units
  • Ceiling height and layout: high or vaulted ceilings, stairwells, tall ladders

Most smoke detector installation and smoke alarm installation is completed in one visit. If you also need carbon monoxide detector installation, we can handle both during the same appointment.

Wired smoke detectors, also known as hardwired smoke alarms, get their power directly from your home’s electrical system. Here’s how they typically work:

  1. Electrical Wiring:

    • Primary Power Source: Wired smoke detectors are connected to your home’s electrical wiring, usually via a dedicated circuit. This connection ensures a constant power supply, making them more reliable than battery-only smoke detectors.
    • Connection Points: These detectors are usually wired into the ceiling or wall, where they can be directly connected to the electrical circuit. An electrician will typically connect them to the same circuit as your lighting or a dedicated smoke alarm circuit to ensure continuous power.
  2. Battery Backup:

    • Secondary Power Source: To provide continuous protection during power outages, wired smoke detectors also include a battery backup. The battery kicks in if the main power supply is interrupted, ensuring the alarm remains operational.
    • Maintenance: It's important to regularly check and replace the batteries in the backup system to ensure the smoke detector functions properly during an outage.
  3. Interconnected Systems:

    • Enhanced Safety: Many wired smoke detectors are part of an interconnected system, meaning if one detector is triggered, all detectors in the home will sound an alarm. This is particularly useful for larger homes to ensure all occupants are alerted to a fire.
    • Wiring for Interconnection: In an interconnected system, detectors are wired to communicate with each other, either through a dedicated wire or wirelessly in some modern systems.

Installation Considerations

  • Professional Installation: For safety and compliance with local building codes, it is recommended to have a licensed electrician install hardwired smoke detectors.
  • Regular Testing and Maintenance: Even though they are wired, regular testing and maintenance are essential to ensure they function correctly. Monthly tests and annual battery replacements are standard practices.

In summary, wired smoke detectors get their primary power from the home's electrical system, with a battery backup for emergencies. Proper installation and regular maintenance are crucial for their reliable operation.

If your hardwired smoke detector is beeping, it can be due to several reasons. Here are the common causes and solutions:

  1. Low Battery

    • Cause: Even hardwired smoke detectors have backup batteries to ensure they work during a power outage. If the backup battery is low, the detector will beep to alert you.
    • Solution: Replace the battery. Make sure to use the correct type of battery recommended by the manufacturer.
  2. Power Issues

    • Cause: There might be a problem with the power supply to the smoke detector. This could be due to a loose connection, a tripped circuit breaker, or a power surge.
    • Solution: Check the circuit breaker to ensure it hasn’t tripped. Inspect the wiring connections to make sure they are secure. If the problem persists, consider contacting an electrician.
  3. Dust or Debris

    • Cause: Dust, cobwebs, or other debris can accumulate inside the smoke detector, interfering with its sensors.
    • Solution: Gently vacuum around the detector’s vents or use a can of compressed air to clean the inside of the unit. Make sure the power is off before cleaning.
  4. Sensor Malfunction

    • Cause: Smoke detectors can sometimes malfunction or become faulty, causing them to beep.
    • Solution: Reset the smoke detector by turning off the power at the circuit breaker, removing the detector, and pressing the test button for about 15 seconds. Reinstall the detector and turn the power back on. If it continues to beep, you may need to replace the unit.
  5. End of Life

    • Cause: Smoke detectors have a limited lifespan, typically around 7-10 years. If the detector is nearing the end of its life, it will beep to indicate it needs to be replaced.
    • Solution: Check the manufacturing date on the back of the detector. If it’s older than 7-10 years, replace the entire unit with a new one.
  6. Interconnected Alarm Issues

    • Cause: If you have interconnected smoke detectors, an issue with one detector can cause all units to beep.
    • Solution: Check all interconnected units to identify the source of the problem. Reset or replace the faulty unit as necessary.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Replace the Battery: Even for hardwired detectors, start by replacing the backup battery.
  2. Check the Power Supply: Ensure the detector is receiving power and the circuit breaker is not tripped.
  3. Clean the Detector: Remove any dust or debris that might be affecting the sensor.
  4. Reset the Unit: Perform a reset by turning off the power, removing the detector, pressing the test button, and then reinstalling it.
  5. Inspect the Age: Check the age of the detector and replace it if it’s past its recommended lifespan.

By following these steps, you can usually identify and resolve the issue causing your hardwired smoke detector to beep. If the problem persists, it may be best to consult a professional electrician.
