Electrician New Construction FAQs

In new residential construction, the most commonly used electrical wire is non-metallic (NM) cable, often referred to by the brand name Romex. This type of cable is widely used due to its versatility and ease of installation. NM cable typically contains three or more conductors, including a hot wire, a neutral wire, and a ground wire, all encased in a plastic sheathing for protection.

Types of Electrical Wires Used in New Construction

Non-Metallic (NM) Cable: This is the standard for most residential wiring. It is suitable for dry, indoor locations and is used for general-purpose wiring, including outlets, switches, and lighting circuits.

Metal-Clad (MC) Cable: This type of cable is used in areas where additional protection is needed, such as basements or areas exposed to potential damage. It features a metal sheathing.

Underground Feeder (UF) Cable: Used for outdoor and underground installations, UF cable is similar to NM cable but has a tougher plastic sheathing to withstand moisture and other environmental factors.

Armored Cable (AC): Similar to MC cable, armored cable is used when additional protection is required. It is typically used in buildings with fewer than three stories.

Materials and Specifications

Copper and Aluminum: Most residential wires are made from copper due to its excellent conductivity and durability. Aluminum is less common but may be used in specific applications.

Wire Gauge: The wire gauge is crucial as it determines the current-carrying capacity. Common gauges for residential wiring include 14-gauge and 12-gauge for general circuits, with larger appliances requiring 10-gauge or thicker wires.

Insulation and Sheathing: Wires are typically insulated with thermoplastic (THHN/THWN) to resist heat and protect against electrical shock. The insulation is color-coded to indicate the wire's function: black or red for hot wires, white for neutral, and green or bare for ground wires.

NM cable is the predominant choice for new residential construction due to its ease of use and compliance with safety standards. Other types of cables are selected based on specific needs, such as environmental exposure or additional protection requirements.

For today's residential new construction, a 240-volt electrical service is typically recommended. This service is provided by two 120-volt wires and a neutral wire, which allows for both 120-volt and 240-volt circuits within the home. The 240-volt service is used for larger appliances such as air conditioning units, electric dryers, and electric ranges, while the 120-volt service is used for lights, outlets, and smaller appliances.
